About our songket & sampin collection

A sampin songket is worn over the baju Melayu and tied at the waist, with the main motif to the front. It completes the outfit for Friday prayer, weddings, Hari Raya and formal occasions.

The sampin in this collection are Indian-woven and sold sewn, so they need no cutting or tailoring before they are worn. One design is sold in a 2-metre length; the length of each piece is stated on its product page.

The gold thread in songket is woven into the cloth rather than printed on the surface. That is what gives the sampin its weight, and the weight is what holds a neat fold through an event. A heavier cloth also stores better and survives repeated wear.

Store a sampin folded and out of direct sunlight, so the gold thread keeps its shine. Do not machine wash and do not bleach. If it needs cleaning, have it dry cleaned or sponge only the soiled part with a damp cloth.

Start from the colour of your baju Melayu. A gold-threaded sampin works with nearly any colour, while a darker sampin reads better at a formal evening event. Check the length too: the excess is folded to the front, so extra length is not a problem. If you are buying for a group of groomsmen, tell us the number and the colour you want.
